Statistical Profile for all 4 CEDAR Programs (PDF)

Expansion Activities

Although the CEDAR program was originally conceived, initiated, developed and implemented in Pikeville, Kentucky in the winter of 1993, its boundaries has since expanded to the following regions through the assistance and sheparding of the original organization known as CEDAR, Inc., which now includes seven eastern Kentucky counties. The following three organizations have and continue to offer the original Coal Study Unit and Coal Fair programs developed by CEDAR, Inc.

CEDAR of West Kentucky was formed in 1994 through the initial and primary efforts of Costain Coal and the Western Kentucky Coal Association and operated for ten years before it was halted in 2004. This program restarted for the 2006-2007 school year;

CEDAR of Southern West Virginia was formed in 2002 through the initial and primary efforts of Arch Coal’s Coal Mac group in Mingo County, WV. It continues to operate and this year has expanded its borders to include six southern West Virginia counties;

CEDAR of Virginia was formed in 2005 through the initial and primary efforts of Alpha Natural Resources. This being their second year the program is operating in the southwest Virginia county of Wise with the goal of expanding to other Virginia coal counties in the next few years.

It needs to be noted that the North Carolina Institute (NCCI-The Coal Institute) contributed the first $5,000 to each of the four CEDAR organizations and have continued their financial support, in varying amounts, in each year of each organization’s existence.
